Honda R&D Co., Ltd. is researching CI (Cooperative Intelligence) that is the artificial intelligence understanding surrounding environment by itself, communicating with its user and surrounding people and realizing cooperative behavior with them.  CI is applied to automated driving vehicles, driver assistance systems and micro-mobility in order to realize evolution of people’s lives and mobility. Various intelligent vehicles using CI will be introduced in this technical visit as follows.

Demonstration 1: Automated driving vehicle in city area  (Experience as a passenger*)
The automated driving car using CI safely goes through congested driving scenes simulating city driving  while cooperating with other traffic participants. It recognizes driving environment including traffic participants and road structure by itself and determines its behavior without relying on predetermined trajectory and high-definition map.

Demonstration 2: Cooperative safety driving assist system  (Experience as a passenger*)
The CI system predicts a risk surrounding an ego car and judges whether a driver overlooks it or not through driver monitoring system.  If the driver doesn’t aware the existence of the risk, the system alerts to the driver through human-machine interfaces and avoid a traffic accident in advance.

Demonstration 3: Interactive human-like communication between micro-mobility and people (Experience as observation)
The micro-mobility using CI and its user communicate and understand each other‘s intentions and realize human-like interaction. When the user calls the micro-mobility, they determine the appropriate boarding position through mutual communication based on conversation and gesture instructions.

Demonstration 4: utomated driving micro-mobility without using high-definition map (Experience as a driver*)
The micro-mobility using CI can recognize road-structure based on image data from multi-cameras without high-definition map and drive automatically based on user’s intention instructions such as going through or turning at intersection through operating joystick.

*Very large people cannot ride due to the size limitations of vehicles.

An open innovation site was established under the Kyōsō-no-Mori initiative, within the grounds of the Central Research Laboratory of Hitachi, Ltd. in Kokubunji City, Tokyo, in 2019.
Here, researchers and designers are working together in symbiosis with the surrounding natural environment of an old-growth forest of the Musashino region and several freshwater springs which feed into the No River, or Nogawa, to drive innovation through co-creation. The tour of the site will introduce co-creation activities together with actual cases and examples of R&D activities for the Green and Digital transformations being pursued by Hitachi, Ltd.
